Stage 2 of NREM

Stage 2 of NREM sleep is the intermediate stage and it lasts for about 20 minutes. The longer this stage goes on the more and more deeper the person is fallin into sleep. They are also becoming more and more detached from what is going on in the outside world. If you were to try to wake someone up during stage 2 of NREM sleep it would be fairly difficult the longer they have been in stage 2. Characteristics that show a person is in stage 2 of NREM sleep are:
  • The person sleeping will be unable to see anything even if their eyes are open
  • There are larger brain waves and there can also be quick bursts of energy
  • Sounds can easily wake the sleeper.
  • Blood pressure, metabolism, secretions, and cardiac activity all decrease
