The Divisions of the Peripheral Nervous System

  • Autonomic

Autonomic Nervous System, the 'control system' of the Peripheral Nervous System involving ivoluntary movements of the body such as "heart rate, digestion, respiration rate, salivation, perspiration, diameter of the pupils, urination, and sexual arousal." (Wikipedia, 2008)

  • Somatic

Somatic Nervous System is the other 'control system' of the Peripheral Nervous System voluntary senses of the body such as taste, touch, smell, hearing, and sight.

  • Sympathetic

Sympathetic Nervous System is the division of the Peripheral Nervous System in which the Fight or Flight response takes place. This response usually occurs when the body is in a stressful situation." The fight or response is our body's primitive, automatic, inborn response that prepares the body to 'fight' or 'flee' from perceived attack, harm or threat to our survival." (The Body Soul Connection, 1995)
